'thorley maltings' - rustic contemporary family garden
The clients, having recently purchased this converted barn, wanted their garden to be a marriage of the old and new. The barn’s dominant black timber cladding became a strong element echoed in the design.
The garden’s agricultural heritage had left it as open paddocks making structure and height major requirements. A series of elevated beds, black timber structures and large raised pools gave the main terrace a strong feeling of enclosure and inclusion whilst maintaining the rural views.
The garden becomes progressively less formal away from the house to include a large wild flower meadow and a play mound for the children created from excavated soil.
